BMW Motorrad unveiled its first autonomous motorbike at the BMW Motorrad Techday 2018.
The BMW group showcased the bike at its testing ground in Miramas, France. The bike is developed by graduate engineer Stefan Hans and team. It can independently drive off, accelerate, circle a winding test track and brake.
BMW Motorrad is not aiming for a completely independent motorbike. It is looking to use the technology to develop future motorbikes which will be safer and more comfortable.
The company said that the aim of the prototype is to gather knowledge on driving dynamics so that dangerous situations can be detected early and appropriate safety systems can be developed.
These systems will help the driver in critical situations like turning at intersections or when braking suddenly.
The BMW Motorrad team took over two years to develop this prototype.
