The India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations are experiencing prolonged discussions, with the United Kingdom reportedly advocating for reduced duties on its Electric Vehicles (EVs). Government sources revealed that the UK, set to phase out Internal Combustion (IC) engine vehicles by 2035, is keen on expanding its export market for EVs beyond the European Union (EU).

In light of the shifting automotive landscape towards electric mobility in the UK, negotiators are engaged in rigorous talks on multiple fronts. Besides the UK's request for tariff concessions on EVs, ongoing discussions involve critical issues such as rules of origin, alcohol tariffs, and work visas for professionals.
During his visit to the UK, External Affairs Minister (EAM) Jaishankar emphasised the significance of the FTA talks in the India-UK relationship, stating that negotiations were a focal point. He expressed optimism about finding a mutually beneficial "landing point" that addresses the concerns of both nations.
"FTA talks are very much the focus of the India-UK relationship today and India is hopeful of finding a 'landing point' in the negotiations that works for both the sides," he said.
Initiated on January 13, 2022, the India-UK FTA negotiations have undergone 12 rounds, with the most recent round taking place in August 2023.
