Indian minister slams Global Gender Gap report for ‘trying to shame India’

1.5 million women are elected to office in local administrations and that's not accounted for by the Global Gender Gap report released by the World Economic Forum. India was ranked 127 among 146 countries based on gender parity in 2022.

The contribution of women in Indian politics, both at the level of the Parliament as well as the grassroots, is well established but not being recognised by the Global Gender Gap report, according to Smriti Irani, India’s Minister for Women and Child Development. 

India was ranked at 127 out of 146 countries in terms of gender parity — an improvement of eight places from last year, according to the annual Gender Gap Report, 2023 of the World Economic Forum (WEF). India was ranked 135 in the report's 2022 edition
“Global Gender Gap index report is not only used to shame but also to make investors shy away from our country,” she said while speaking at the CNBC-TV18 Future Female Forward event on February 10.
India will rank better on the global gender gap report if contributions of women in self help groups, panchayats are accounted for, according to her.  1.5 million women are elected to office in local administrations, she cited. 
Irani also highlighted India’s effort to bring the need for gender parity to the forefront at the meeting of the World Economic Forum 2024 at Davos, Switzerland.
In January, more than 10,000 companies including the likes of Mastercard, Uber, and Microsoft as well as Indian conglomerates like the Tata Group, TVS Group, Godrej, and Serum Institute of India, among other, came together to support the Indian initiative to form the 'Alliance for Global Good - Gender Equity and Equality' was established to work on the commitments of the G20 leaders to empower women and bring gender parity in opportunities.
“Women are waiting for a dole or to be rescued… We have (now) made a financial case,” the Minister for Women and Child Development told CNBC-TV18.
