India gears up for WTO Ministerial in February, to hold talks for multiple FTAs before polls

Ahead of the WTO MC-13 Ministerial meeting in Abu Dhabi from 26 to 29 February 2024, India is preparing to address several important issues to build consensus on the global stage.

These include Agriculture and WTO reform, negotiations on fisheries subsidies, e-commerce moratorium and TRIPS waiver, the appellate body crisis, trade and sustainable development, and non-trade issues.
While no deadline has been set for ongoing FTA (Free Trade Agreement) negotiations, numerous bilateral meetings are scheduled before the model code of conduct for General Elections takes effect in March this year.
The legal scrubbing process for Pillar-III on the clean economy, Pillar-IV on the fair economy, and the Agreement on the IPEF (Indo-Pacific Economic Framework) is underway, and India has completed the ratification of the agreement.
The structural mechanism has been identified by India based on interministerial and industry consultations.
An in-person Chief negotiators' meeting is scheduled for 18th and 19th January in New Delhi to discuss the settlement package for the India-Australia CECA.
According to India's Department of Commerce, convergence has been achieved in exploratory discussions on MSMEs, sports, competition, innovation, traditional knowledge, labor, and gender tracks.
The track and Chief negotiator-level discussion for the proposed India-EU FTA are slated to take place from January 15 to 19 on modalities for the services and investment chapter.
The talks will be followed by the 7th round of negotiations in New Delhi from February 19 to 23. The 6th round of India-Peru trade agreement negotiations is scheduled to be held in Lima from February 12 to 15, where India aims to diversify the import basket in terms of essential metals and minerals.
