India was consistently one of the world's biggest onion exporters until FY23, but the ban on onion exports has changed all that and hurt onion farmers and traders hard. This has also sown some resentment against the government, especially from the trading community, which has long been a staunch support base for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The Mahayuti government in Maharashtra, however, does not want to take any chances and says it has written to the Centre asking that the ban be lifted.
