The Navi Mumbai International Airport, an ambitious greenfield project underway in Ulwe is officially scheduled to commence operations on March 31, 2025. However, Union Minister for Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya Scindia said on January 13 that he is pushing to start commercial operations by December 2024.

After a recent assessment of the upcoming airport, Scindia revealed its remarkable progress and spoke about the five phases in which the airport is expected to be opened. With 60% of the project already completed, commercial operations of the airport are on track to begin on March 31, 2025.
The airport would open an initial passenger capacity of 2 crore, it will feature the activation of the first terminal and runway during phases one and two. Subsequently, phases three, four, and five are projected to propel passenger capacity to a staggering 9 crore, solidifying the Navi Mumbai International Airport as a major aviation hub. The final phase, scheduled to be completed by 2032, will boast a capacity of over 9 crore passengers, while handling 25 lakh tonnes of cargo annually.

Beyond its structural achievements, the airport stands out for its integrated connectivity with road, rail, metro, and water transport facilities.
Adding another dimension to its impact, the Navi Mumbai International Airport is set to be a significant job creator. With a promising employment multiplier effect, every direct job is expected to generate six indirect jobs, contributing to the region's economic growth.
As efforts intensify to ensure commercial operations commence by December 2024, the Navi Mumbai International Airport emerges as a transformative force — promising unparalleled connectivity, substantial employment opportunities, and a symbol of India's vision for a robust and interconnected future, he said.
The foundation laying ceremony for this greenfield airport was held on February 18, 2018, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiling the foundation plaque. Scindia discussed plans to enhance air connectivity across the country and projected that within the next 10 to 15 years, at least 10 Indian cities would host two airports each. He announced intentions to inspect airports in Kolhapur, Pune, and Navi Mumbai in the coming days.
