Mumbai local train services will be affected for ten days between October 25 and November 4 as Western Railway is going to undertake the work to operationalise the sixth line between Khar and Goregaon. During this period, the commuters who depend on local trains may face inconvenience as several local trains will get cancelled or delayed on this route.
The first phase of the work, which involves establishing separate rail lines for long-distance and suburban trains, started on October 7 and it’s nearing completion.
“Western Railway has started the work of fast-tracking the completion of the Sixth Line project on the Mumbai suburban section. This work on 8.8 km between Khar and Goregaon started from October 7 and is progressing at a fast pace,” Western Railway said in a press release on October 10.
According to Western Railway, a block of 29 days is being taken on the Mumbai Suburban section for the construction work of the sixth line between Khar and Goregaon. During this period services of more than 2,700 local trains and several long-distance trains will be affected.
“The block has been planned so that no trains are cancelled in the initial 10-13 days. Suburban trains will be cancelled from 20 October 2023. About 2,700 services will be cancelled and about 400 services will be partially cancelled/short-terminated. Almost all long-distance trains will also be affected. As many as 60 trains are likely to be cancelled and around 200 partially cancelled/short-terminated,” Western Railway said.
Additionally, Platform 9 at the Andheri station will also be suspended till the project is completed. Apart from that, the long-distance trains will also be affected as 61 mail and express trains have been scheduled to be cancelled and 227 trains are expected to be delayed.
According to the chief public relations officer of Western Railway, Sumit Thakur, the railway authorities have ensured minimum impact on suburban services for the pending infrastructure work, the Times of India reported.
Currently, there are four lines including two slow and two fast on the WR corridor between Mumbai Central and Borivali route. Along with that, a fifth line which is called the suburban train avoidance (STA) line is a bi-directional line with long-distance trains from Mumbai Central and Bandra Terminus. After the sixth line gets operational, it will ensure a separation of the mail or express trains and the suburban trains without causing any disruption. The sixth line is under construction which stretches to a distance of 8.8 km.
Once the work on the sixth line is completed, the crossover from the fifth to the sixth line will be provided at Ram Mandir Station. This will allow the trains to take a diversion during any breakdown in the service on the line. The sixth line will increase the line capacity of the Mumbai Suburban section as well and help in reducing congestion.
