The first flight has taken off from the new Rajkot International Airport in Gujarat, marking a significant milestone after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the airport earlier in July. The expansive airport covers 2,500 acres and is meticulously developed at an investment of over Rs 1,400 crore.
On September 10, the Rajkot International Airport in Gujarat officially initiated its flight operations, symbolising a new era in air travel for the region. Simultaneously, the previous Rajkot Airport ceased commercial activities, with the shutdown process commencing on the night of September 8.
Budget airline IndiGo has chosen Rajkot International Airport as its primary operating base, with all scheduled flights now arriving and departing from the state-of-the-art facility. The final flight from the old Rajkot Airport took off on September 8.

The Airport Authority of India (AAI) decided to close the old Rajkot Airport to facilitate seamless transition to the new greenfield airport, including relocating officials and equipment to the modern Airport.
The newly-established airport is strategically located approximately 30 km away from Rajkot City Positioned along the Rajkot-Ahmedabad highway. To enhance passenger convenience, the state government has introduced a bus service from the ST bus stop to Rajkot International Airport. The service offer daily departures beginning at 6 am and continue every two hours thereafter.
APart from advanced features, the new airport has a runway, apron and a parallel taxi track.
This international airport is envisioned as a pivotal transportation hub, catering to travellers departing for foreign destinations. The terminal building, boasting a substantial built-up area of 23,000 sq metres (excluding the basement), has the capacity to accommodate up to 1,800 passengers simultaneously.
The airport integrates contemporary technology with sustainable design elements. The New Terminal Building (NITB) features sustainability innovations such as a double-insulated roofing system, skylights, energy-efficient LED lighting, and low-heat gain glazing. The terminal building adheres to Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA-4) standards.
