It is mandatory to serve ‘fish curry-rice’ in beach shacks across Goa, according to state tourism minister Rohan Khaunte. This move is a part of the Goan government’s Shack Policy and attempts to promote the state’s rich cuisine to tourists.
Khaunte said that the coconut-based staple, known for its tangy and spicy flavour, was not offered at beach shacks; instead, North Indian food was pushed to customers. With the implementation of the new policy, shacks will need to compulsorily ‘display and serve’ Goan food, particularly fish curry-rice.
According to the newly passed Shack Policy, it’s mandatory for each shack to submit a list of its staff to the tourism department. This policy also intends to address the challenge of illegal hawking and vending on beaches.
Interestingly, hotels in Goa are recording an average of 80 percent occupancy. Although hotels are happy with this figure, Khaunte said that complacency is not an option for the Goan government.
Khaunte also added that the state will further step up its efforts to promote tourism and focus on its vision of quality over quantity.
