People commuting to offices, schools, airports and other places in Bengaluru are likely to face difficulties amid the 'bandh' called by the Federation of the Karnataka State Private Transport Associations on Monday, September 11.
As part of the strike, about 7 lakh to 10 lakh vehicles including autos, taxis, airport taxis, maxi cabs, goods vehicles, school vehicles, stage carriages, contract carriages and corporate buses, will go off the roads on Monday, president of the federation said earlier.
However, emergency, daily essential transportation services and public transport will remain uninterrupted during the bandh.
The bandh was called by the federation to seek a ban on bike taxis and urge the government to extend the Shakti scheme -- which offers free bus rides to women on state-run transport buses -- to private buses as well, among other demands. The office bearers said that they have organised a protest march from Sangolli Rayanna Circle to Freedom Park in the city as part of the bandh.
To mitigate the impact of the strike, the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is reportedly planning to deploy extra buses to meet the demand amid the strike. It will run more bus trips and services to Kempegowda International Airport on Monday.
Moreover, the Bengaluru Metro will run additional trains based on demand, ensuring that the metro service remains available at all times, News 18 reported.
Meanwhile, the Bengaluru Traffic Police and the Bangalore International Airport Ltd. (BIAL) have issued advisories for the passengers.
What does the traffic advisory say?
In its traffic advisory, the Bengaluru traffic police advised road users to use alternative routes and plan their travel accordingly. They said, "There might be disruptions in the operation of taxis, maxi cabs, private buses, and auto-rickshaws on September 11."
The traffic advisory said:
1. Vehicles coming from Goodshed Road should proceed towards G T Road via Sangolli Rayanna Circle to reach Okalipuram and proceed towards Sujatha Theatre
2. Vehicles coming from Anand Rao Circle should move towards Old JDS office road and reach Seshadripuram Road
3. Vehicles coming from Mysuru Bank Circle should proceed towards Palace Road, then towards Maharani Junction underpass, and go towards Basaveshwara Circle
4. Vehicles coming from RR Junction towards Khoday's circle should move towards Krishna flour mill and proceed towards Malleshwaram
ROADS TO AVOID:
> KG Road
> Sheshadri Road
> GT Road
> Roads around Freedom Park and Majestic Bus Stand
Bengaluru airport advisory
Meanwhile, the Bangalore International Airport requested passengers to follow the media releases from transport authorities for updates. "Due to the one-day Bengaluru bandh protest on September 11, 2023, all modes of public transport will be impacted. Passengers are advised to plan their travel to and from the airport," it added.
Why is the strike happening?
The federation of the Karnataka State Private Transport Associations has called for a bandh seeking a ban on bike taxis, and urging the government to extend the Shakti scheme -- that offers free bus rides to women on state-run transport buses -- to private buses as well, among other demands.
The private transporters have claimed that they have been negatively impacted by the Shakti scheme and that the state government has not fulfilled their demands despite repeated discussions.
