After the devastating wildfire that struck Maui's Lahaina town two months ago, the region was set to welcome back travelers on Sunday, despite opposition from some residents. West Maui saw the reopening of five hotels, as well as the availability of eight timeshare properties early this month, located a few miles from the wildfire's impact.
The decision to reopen coincided with the two-month anniversary of the wildfire, which claimed the lives of at least 98 people and destroyed over 2,000 structures, including many homes and apartments. While some Lahaina residents objected to resuming tourism, citing the emotional toll of the disaster, more than 3,500 people signed a petition asking Hawaii Gov Josh Green to delay the restart.
Green argued that it was essential for Maui's tourism-driven economy to begin its path to recovery. Laura Paulson, executive director of the Maui Hotel and Lodging Association, anticipated a slow return of visitors, with many travelers opting not to visit the region initially.

The local government emphasized the importance of respecting the burn zone and following guidelines to ensure a respectful and harmonious coexistence between visitors and the affected community.
