The preparations for Diwali are in full swing as the festival of light will be celebrated with traditional fervour across the country on November 12 this year. In many states, Diwali festivities continue for five days and Dhanteras marks the beginning of the festival. Dhanteras, also known as Dhantrayodashi or Dhanvantari Trayodashi, often falls two days before Diwali.
As per Panchang, Dhanteras is observed on the Trayodashi Tithi of Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the month of Kartik. The day is considered auspicious for buying gold and silver, new utensils and other household items.
On this day, it is customary to worship Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Kubera, and Lord Dhanvantari during the Pradosh Kaal or in the evening. It’s believed that buying new items on this day brings wealth and prosperity.

On Dhanteras devotees worship Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and Lord Kuber, the custodian of wealth to be bestowed with prosperity and good fortune. On this day Lord Dhanvantari, who is known as the god of Ayurveda, is also worshipped for good health and affluence.
It’s a tradition in many states across India to buy gold and silver, new utensils and other metal items on Dhanteras. It’s believed that buying new items, especially gold and silver, brings good fortune and wealth.
Apart from gold and silver, you can also consider purchasing copper utensils, a Kuber Yantra, or a brass elephant on Dhanteras. Additionally, buying a broom on Dhanteras is also considered auspicious, as it is believed that a broom brings the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi. However, it is advisable not to buy items made of glass, as it is associated with Rahu. The choices of items to buy on Dhanteras vary according to traditions and beliefs, but most of the purchases are done during the auspicious muhurat.
