Dev Diwali, also known as Dev Deepawali, is celebrated 14 days after the grand festival of Diwali. The day holds immense spiritual significance for devotees of Lord Shiva. As per mythology, it’s believed that on this day Lord Shiva slayed demon king Tripurasur.

On this day, the rituals include bathing in the holy waters of Ganga and lighting oil lamps at homes and temples. Dev Diwali is observed on the 15th day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Kartik, according to the Hindu calendar.
Grand celebrations mark the day in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, a famous pilgrimage centre and the abode of Lord Kashi Vishwanath. Devotees lit thousands of earthen lamps on the ghats of Ganga river on this day and the illuminated river bank offers a spectacular view in the evening.

Devotees in Varanasi start the day with Kartik Snan, a ritual bath in the holy waters of Ganga in the morning. Rangoli and candlelight bring life to homes as devotees engage in recitation of Akhand Ramayan and distribute prasad. According to local legends, it’s believed that on Dev Diwali gods and goddesses descend on earth in Varanasi to take a holy dip in Ganga and to get a glimpse of Lord Kashi Vishwanath, the presiding deity of the ancient city.
