Idea and Vodafone have laid off about 8000 employees, close to a third of the total workforce of both the companies combined together, since the telecom companies merger was announced, Business Standard reported.
On August 31, Vodafone and Idea merged to become India’s largest telecom network service, Vodafone Idea limited, and now have about 17,000 employees, people aware of the development told Business Standard, adding that it is not fully aware as to how many employees from each company are part of the new entity.
At the end of March 2017, the two companies had about 25,000 of total workforce. As per the telecom companies’ annual report, Idea Cellular had 11,784 permanent staff and Vodafone India had about 13,187 employees, the report said.
The telecom companies reiterated by saying that they have included most of the employees in the newly formed company and that it is incorrect to say that thousands of employees from both the companies have been laid off, the report added.
