YouTube to roll out stricter policies to combate misinformation & AI clones of musicians
Amid the rise of generative artificial intelligence, YouTube on Tuesday (November 14) announced an update to its policy aimed at combating misinformation through this emerging technology. The video-sharing platform will now label content created using AI.

"In the coming months, we'll introduce updates to inform viewers when the content they're seeing is synthetic. Specifically, creators will be required to disclose if they've created altered or synthetic content that appears realistic, including the use of AI tools," stated YouTube Vice Presidents of Product Management, Jennifer Flannery O’Connor and Emily Moxley, in a blog post.
For instance, videos that "realistically depict an event that never happened or show someone saying or doing something they didn’t actually do" will be subject to this disclosure requirement.
When uploading content, creators will be prompted with new options to indicate whether the content contains realistically altered or synthetic material, especially crucial for sensitive topics like elections, ongoing conflicts, public health crises, or statements from public officials.
YouTube also announced that music partners will now have the ability to request the removal of AI-generated music content mimicking an artist’s unique voice. Factors like whether the content is subject to news reporting, analysis, or critique of synthetic vocals will be considered in deciding removal requests.
In parallel, India is preparing to establish its own policies to address the growing concern of AI-generated content and deepfakes. A recent deepfake video featuring Indian actress Rashmika Mandana garnered attention for its sophistication.
Last week, Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, revealed plans to launch the India AI program on December 11.
