Signal, the renowned encrypted messaging platform, is rolling out support for usernames in a move aimed at enhancing user privacy. This significant update allows users to create unique identifiers as an alternative to sharing their phone numbers.
In an announcement on Tuesday, February 20, Signal unveiled a series of updates aimed at further securing users' personal data, particularly their phone numbers.
These usernames, distinct from the profile names visible during chats, serve as an alternative means of identification, allowing users to connect without divulging their phone numbers. Unlike social media handles, Signal usernames are not publicly searchable, providing an additional layer of anonymity.
The app, which has long championed private communication, is now introducing measures to limit the visibility of phone numbers within its platform. Under the new default setting, users' phone numbers will no longer be openly displayed to everyone they interact with on Signal. Instead, only individuals who have the user's number saved in their device contacts will have access to this information.
Additionally, Signal users will have the ability to manage who can find them by their phone number on the platform. A new privacy setting enables individuals to restrict visibility, ensuring that only those with the exact username can initiate contact. This feature is particularly beneficial for users who prioritise discretion in their online interactions.
While these updates are currently in beta testing, they are expected to roll out to all users in the coming weeks. Importantly, Signal highlights that these enhancements are optional, affirming users' autonomy in configuring their privacy settings according to their preferences.
