Samsung Galaxy S24 vs S24+ vs S24 Ultra: Which phone is right for you?

Earlier this year, Samsung launched the latest lineup of its Galaxy S series — S24 Ultra, S24+ and S24, with a heavy focus on AI-based features, dubbed ‘Galaxy AI.’ The base Galaxy S24 is priced at ₹79,999, the larger Galaxy S24+ at ₹99,9999, and the flagship S24 Ultra at ₹1,29,999. While the S24 comes with 8 GB of RAM and 256/512 GB of storage, the S24+ is available in 12/256, and 12/512 variants. The S24 Ultra, meanwhile, is available in 12/256, 12/512, and 12/1 TB variants.

If you're a Galaxy user and are looking to upgrade, this guide will give you all the details you need to help you pick the right smartphone.

Firstly, let's talk about the physical dimensions. The Galaxy S24, with its compact form factor measuring 5.79 x 2.78 x 0.30 inches and weighing 168 grams, stands as the smallest and lightest option, making it the most convenient for daily handling. The S24+ strikes a balance between size and functionality, boasting dimensions of 6.24 x 3.00 x 0.30 inches and weighing 196 grams. Meanwhile, the S24 Ultra deviates in design, featuring a more squared-off aesthetic akin to its Ultra predecessors, with dimensions of 6.40 x 3.11 x 0.34 inches and weighing 232 grams, is less ‘pocket-friendly.’ Notably, the S Pen compatibility remains exclusive to the Ultra variant, which incorporates a dedicated slot for stylus storage.

In terms of display, all three models flaunt flat screens with a dynamic 120Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 2,600 nits, ensuring responsive touch and enhanced visibility under various lighting conditions. The S24 sports a 6.2-inch FHD+ display, the S24+ boasts a 6.7-inch QHD+ screen, while the S24 Ultra features a spacious 6.8-inch QHD+ panel. Each device houses a fingerprint sensor beneath the display for biometric authentication.

Under the hood, the S24 Ultra in India houses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy SoC, offering augmented CPU, GPU, and NPU capabilities compared to standard versions. The S24 and S24+ are powered by Samsung's own Exynos 2400 chipset. The Exynos lineup doesn't have the most stellar reputation, with reports of overheating, power-hungry, and performance-throttled S24 and S24+.

However, I have not faced these issues during my time with the devices. Of course, your mileage may vary.

As for the cameras, the S24 and S24+ share a rear camera setup comprising a 50MP main shooter, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, and a 10MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. The S24 Ultra elevates the photography experience with a 200MP main camera, supplemented by a 50MP telephoto lens offering 5x optical zoom. All models deliver 8K video recording capabilities and feature a 12MP front-facing camera for selfies.

Battery capacities vary slightly across the lineup, with the S24, S24+, and S24 Ultra housing 4,000 mAh, 4,900 mAh, and 5,000 mAh batteries, respectively. Despite minor increases over their predecessors, all models exhibit commendable power efficiency, with endurance ranging from approximately 13-14 hours per day. Wired charging speeds also differ, with the S24 supporting up to 25W, while the S24+ and S24 Ultra accommodate speeds of up to 45W. Additionally, wireless charging capabilities are consistent across all models, supporting speeds of up to 15W and featuring wireless power share functionality.

Software-wise, all three phones operate on Android 14 with Samsung's One UI 6.1 overlay, promising seven years of OS and security updates. Notably, Samsung's Dex software and Bixby voice assistant are integrated, complemented by an array of AI features enhancing user experience.

In conclusion

The choice between the Samsung Galaxy S24, S24+, and S24 Ultra hinges on individual preferences and priorities. The S24 Ultra caters to users seeking stylus compatibility, superior camera capabilities, and a large display, while the S24+ offers a balanced blend of performance and usability.

Alternatively, the base S24 model provides a compact package with robust specifications for those prioritising portability. Regardless of your selection, Samsung's Galaxy S24 lineup delivers exceptional hardware, formidable performance, and refined software, ensuring a gratifying user experience tailored to your needs.
