During the opening of the three-day India Mobile Congress 2023, being held in New Delhi, Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, a subsidiary of Jio Platforms Limited, unveiled Jio SpaceFiber, India's first satellite-based GigaFiber service.
Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited Akash Ambani launched the Jio SpaceFiber in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
What is Jio SpaceFiber?
Jio already provides high-speed broadband services, both fixed-line and wireless, to more than 450 million consumers in India. To expedite digital inclusion for every household in the country, Jio has introduced Jio SpaceFiber alongside its existing premier broadband services, JioFiber and JioAirFiber.
Jio SpaceFiber is a satellite-based broadband service. The objective of the Jio SpaceFiber service is to deliver high-speed broadband connectivity to previously underserved regions throughout India. This service is set to be accessible throughout the country at highly competitive rates.
How will the tech work?
Jio has formed a partnership with SES to harness the most advanced medium earth orbit (MEO) satellite technology globally, specifically SES's O3b and new O3b mPOWER satellites.
This makes Jio the sole provider of groundbreaking technology, delivering scalable and cost-effective broadband access across all of India, offering an unprecedented level of reliability and service flexibility, and setting a new industry standard.
Where is it available?
Currently, Jio SpaceFiber is operational in four of India's most remote areas – Gir in Gujarat, Korba in Chattisgarh, Nabrangpur in Odissa, and ONGC-Jorhat in Assam.
Akash Ambani said Jio has made it possible for millions of Indian households and businesses to experience broadband internet for the first time.
"With Jio SpaceFiber, we are expanding our coverage to reach the millions who are yet to be connected. Jio SpaceFiber will enable universal access, allowing individuals and communities to fully engage in the new digital era, with gigabit-speed access to essential online government, education, health, and entertainment services," he said.
Jio, in a statement, said the firm will ensure that consumers and businesses can enjoy reliable, low-latency, high-speed internet and entertainment services, irrespective of their location. Additionally, the satellite network will enhance the capacity for mobile backhaul, further expanding the reach and scale of Jio True5G, particularly in remote areas of the country.
