Qualcomm reveals new XR chipset to compete with Apple's Vision Pro headset
Qualcomm on Thursday, January 4, unveiled the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 Platform, a single-chip architecture that enables 4.3K spatial computing at 90 frames per second. Samsung and Google will be one of the first companies to leverage this technology.

The three giants announced their partnership last year to work on mixed reality devices and this could be a good opportunity for them to take on Apple’s upcoming $3,499 Vision Pro headset.
Building on the recently-introduced Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 — used in the Meta Quest 3 — the new 'plus' version takes immersive experiences to a higher level with a 15% increase in GPU frequency and a 20% boost in CPU frequency, Qualcomm said in a release.
Inkang Song, Vice President and Head of Technology Strategy Team at Samsung Electronics, said, "With Samsung's mobile expertise and our joint commitment, we aim to create the best-in-class XR experience for Galaxy users."
Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 is also capable of supporting 12 or more concurrent cameras with on-device artificial intelligence (AI), which “can effortlessly track the user, their movements, and the world around them for effortless navigation and unparalleled experiences that merge physical and digital spaces.”
Hugo Swart, Vice President and General Manager of XR at Qualcomm Technologies Inc, expressed the platform's potential impact, stating, “Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 unlocks 4.3K resolution which will take XR productivity and entertainment to the next level by bringing spectacularly clear visuals to use cases such as room-scale screens, life-size overlays, and virtual desktops. We are advancing our commitment to power the best XR devices and experiences that will supercharge our immersive future.”
Further, Shahram Izadi, Vice President of AR at Google, stated, “We look forward to continuing our collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies and Samsung on the future of immersive and spatial XR. We’re excited for the Android ecosystem to take advantage of Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2’s capabilities and enable new experiences.”
It is not yet clear when the headsets will be launched by either Samsung or Google. However, Samsung told CNBC during the 2023 World Mobile Congress that it is working out a roadmap for mixed reality products.
