In the fast-paced world of artificial intelligence (AI), Nvidia has emerged as a frontrunner with a significant two-year head start over its competitors. Anand Deshpande, Chairman and Managing Director of Persistent Systems, emphasised this advantage in a recent discussion with CNBC-TV18.

Deshpande noted that while many companies are scrambling to develop and improve chips for AI applications, Nvidia's Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) have long been established in the market. The company's GPUs, originally designed for graphics rendering, have seamlessly transitioned into powering AI tasks, placing Nvidia firmly in the driver's seat of the AI chip market.

"I believe they have a two-year head start; that's how I perceive this. Many individuals are working on building superior chips and exploring ways to adapt existing ones for AI. However, NVIDIA's GPUs have been in the market for a long time. All of a sudden, they have been repurposed for AI, placing them unequivocally in the driver's seat at the moment."

Speaking on the sudden surge of interest in AI and the notable tailwind propelling the sector, Deshpande highlighted the immense potential for growth. With a large workforce trained in AI, there is a prime opportunity for companies, particularly in India, to capitalise on this burgeoning technology.

When asked about India's role in the AI landscape, Deshpande stressed the importance of research and data quality. He emphasised the need for clean, high-quality data to fuel AI advancements, suggesting that India focus on making its data accessible in a responsible manner.

Expressing his views on the multifaceted nature of AI growth, Deshpande acknowledged the diverse aspects it encompasses. "I think AI growth is going to be very multidimensional; there are going to be many aspects of AI. And, of course, the Indian IT companies are well-placed for a set of AI projects that will come anyway, in terms of what India needs to focus on."

Regarding India's strategic focus, he stressed the need for increased investment in research.

"I think research is something that we need to invest in a lot more. And AI is all about data. So having clean quality data about us in our systems, so that AI is about our data and our world would be equally important. So I think trying to figure out how we make our data available in a responsible way is next."
