Nestle India chief: Technology is meant to serve mankind, not the other way round
Suresh Narayanan, the Chairman and Managing Director of Nestle India, underscored the importance of harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to serve humanity rather than allowing them to dictate its course.

Speaking to CNBC-TV18 during a fireside chat at The Growth Summit in Delhi on Wednesday, Narayanan cautioned against the unchecked proliferation of AI and ML, warning that allowing these technologies to control us could lead to unforeseen consequences. "I think the day we allow AI and ML to start driving us is the day that Nemesis will dawn on us," he said.
While acknowledging the benefits of AI and ML, Narayanan stressed the need to utilise them in a manner that enhances and supports human development. He highlighted their potential to level the playing field and democratise access to resources, citing the example of e-commerce's impact on traditional distribution models.
Narayanan emphasised the importance of responsible AI usage, particularly in countries like India where employment generation is a vital societal concern. "In a country like India, we have to be very, very cognizant of the fact that employment generation is a key aspect of this society," he stated.
He urged careful consideration in the deployment of AI for predictive analysis, information dissemination, and strategic planning. "Usage of AI in predictive, informative, and in terms of defining your planning mechanisms has to be thought through very, very carefully," Narayanan cautioned.
