Mumbai Megapolis Metaverse: Explore the city's future through virtual reality
The Department of Tourism, Government of Maharashtra, and the Tech Entrepreneurs Association of Mumbai (TEAM) have launched the Mumbai Megapolis Metaverse — a 'digital twin' project that redefines urban governance and citizen engagement in India.

This initiative, unveiled at the Mumbai Tech Week on Sunday, February 18, is said to offer an immersive virtual representation of Mumbai, showcasing ongoing infrastructure developments and envisioning the transformation of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) by 2025.
Led by the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, the Mumbai Megapolis Metaverse employs cutting-edge technology to create a virtual city experience. This digital twin project aims to educate citizens on the 12 identified infrastructure projects, providing insights into technological, cost, environmental, and other crucial factors, fostering awareness of long-term sustainable infrastructure development.
"It showcases and envisions not just projects within the city limits but all of MMR (Mumbai Metropolitan Region)," the Deputy CM said while launching the project. He was alongside TEAM members, including Ashish Hemrajani, co-founder of BookMyShow, Harsh Jain, co-founder of Dream11, and Aakrit Vaish, co-founder of Haptik, to name a few.
The metaverse offers a firsthand look into the significant transformation underway in the MMR, featuring projects such as the Mumbai Coastal Road, Mumbai Metro Line 3, Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, and the Navi Mumbai International Airport.
These developments will be accessible to citizens through virtual reality (VR) devices, a dedicated mobile app, website, and the official Maharashtra tourism platform during the Mumbai Tech Week.
Hosted by the Tech Entrepreneurs Association of Mumbai (TEAM), the Mumbai Tech Week is a not-for-profit initiative celebrating the city's tech ecosystem.
With 46 tech companies collaborating, the event spans from February 18-23, 2024, culminating in a launch event at the Jio World Convention Center, BKC, Mumbai. The metaverse will be a focal point, providing a unique opportunity for citizens to engage with Mumbai's technological advancements.
MTW brings together influential figures, including policymakers, tech entrepreneurs, corporates, investors, and media. Notable personalities such as Smriti Irani, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Amitabh Kant, and industry leaders from Meta, Microsoft, and Google will contribute to the discussions.
TEAM is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the city's tech ecosystem. With 46 members from leading tech companies in Mumbai, TEAM encourages collaboration, offers resources, and advocates for policies that foster the growth of tech startups in the city. As a catalyst for innovation, TEAM works to unleash the full potential of Mumbai's tech enterprises through networking and support.
