MeitY advisory: AI platforms don’t need govt nod anymore, focus on deepfakes
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has made a significant reversal on its previous advisory regarding the approval process for platforms utilising AI models. The government body on Friday, March 15, issued a fresh advisory, rescinding the requirement for platforms to seek government approval for AI models under development.

Instead, MeitY now emphasises the importance of labelling AI-generated content, particularly those susceptible to misuse in deepfake technology.
The new advisory highlights concerns over the negligence of intermediaries and platforms in implementing due diligence, as mandated by the existing IT Rules. Key directives within the advisory include:
Labelling deepfake-prone content:
Every intermediary and platform is now mandated to ensure that AI-generated content, especially content susceptible to deepfake manipulation, is labelled accordingly.
Preventing unlawful content sharing: Platforms are instructed to deploy AI models that prevent users from posting or sharing unlawful content.
Mitigating bias in AI models: MEITY emphasises the need for platforms to ensure that AI models deployed do not exhibit bias and refrain from interfering with electoral processes.
Informing users of AI model limitations: Untested AI models are to be deployed only after proper labelling and disclosure to users, informing them of potential inaccuracies in results.
Educating users on consequences: Platforms are required to inform users of the consequences associated with posting unlawful information, further promoting responsible online behaviour and content sharing practices.
