The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has released its long-awaited report on the India AI Programme, a comprehensive document produced following four months of rigorous deliberations by six working groups. The report outlines an ambitious roadmap for the country's AI and robotics sectors.
One of the report's central aspects is to position artificial intelligence (AI) as a pivotal enabler of India's burgeoning digital economy, with the goal of reaching a $1 trillion valuation. To achieve this, the report stressed the need to focus on use cases that will support AI applications across various sectors.
Moreover, the report highlights the importance of data, envisioning the creation of an India Data Sets Platform. This platform aims to facilitate the development of a diverse collection of anonymised data sets that will be used to train multi-parameter models. This data-driven approach is expected to drive innovation and enhance the capabilities of AI applications.
In line with the report's goals, MeitY has also proposed the establishment of an India AI Compute platform, a public-private partnership (PPP) project that will focus on expanding GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) capacity. This collaborative effort is aimed at providing the necessary computational power for AI applications and research, fostering an environment conducive to innovation and development.
Furthermore, the report lays out a roadmap for the development of India AI Chips, underlining the need for domestic chip manufacturing to support the growth of AI and robotics industries. This initiative seeks to enhance India's technological self-reliance and competitiveness on a global scale.
MeitY has also released a consultation paper on the National Robotics Policy, inviting comments and suggestions from industry stakeholders. The policy, which is currently under review, will play a crucial role in shaping the future of automation, autonomous systems, and the robotics industry in India.
MeitY has encouraged industry stakeholders, experts, and the public to actively participate in shaping these policies. This approach ensures that a wide range of perspectives and expertise is considered, creating a well-rounded foundation for the future of AI and robotics in India.
