Instagram has rolled out several new features for Direct Messaging (DM), aimed at enhancing user connectivity and improving the messaging experience. While users frequently engage on the platform through posts and stories, private messaging is a vital component of the Instagram experience, and these updates are designed to make it more versatile and enjoyable, the platform said.
Message Editing
The most interesting addition is the ability to edit messages within a 15-minute window after sending. Users can rectify typos or adjust the content of their messages by pressing and holding the sent message, then selecting the "edit" option from the dropdown menu.
Pin Chats for Easy Access
Another feature is the option to pin up to three group or one-on-one chats to the top of the inbox. This is particularly useful for prioritising conversations with best friends, family, or those that users wish to access easily. To pin a chat, users can swipe left or tap and hold on the chat, then select "pin." The option to unpin a thread is also available.
Toggle Read Receipts
The update introduces the ability to toggle read receipts on or off for all chats or specific ones. Users can manage this feature through their account settings. By navigating to account settings, tapping on Messages and story replies, and selecting Show read receipts, users can toggle read receipts on or off as per their preference.
Save Favourite Stickers
Instagram now allows users to save their favourite stickers in DMs for quick access. By pressing and holding on a sticker, users can store it, making it easily accessible at the top of the sticker collection during subsequent use.
Enhanced Replies with Multimedia Options
In response to a message, users can now include stickers, GIFs, videos, photos, and voice messages. To utilise this feature, users should press and hold on the message they want to reply to, select "reply," and choose from various content options.
Personalise Chats with Themes
Instagram introduced a variety of themes to personalise chat experiences. Users can select themes based on their mood or the nature of the conversation. The available themes include Love (soon to be animated), Lollipop, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and more. Changing the theme for a chat is simple – tap the chat name, go into themes, and choose the preferred theme.
Instagram said continues to work towards creating a private and enjoyable messaging experience for its users, with more features expected to be unveiled in the future.
