India proposes these steps for a global crackdown on phishing
To combat the escalating threat of phishing attacks, India has urged for worldwide cooperation among stakeholders at the United Nations (UN). This call comes as part of India's draft submission to the 'Ad Hoc Committee to Elaborate a Comprehensive International Convention on Countering the Use of Information and Communications Technologies for Criminal Purposes'.

The committee, convened by a UNGA resolution, concluded its latest session from January 29 to February 9, 2024, in New York.
Outlined within India's proposal are these measures aimed at tackling phishing:
24/7 network for global collaboration: India advocates for leveraging the 24/7 network as a swift channel for global collaboration, facilitating prompt responses to urgent issues related to phishing. "Neglecting its use for addressing our most critical needs would be a disservice,” the proposal reads.
Inaccessibility of phishing links: India's draft convention proposes rendering phishing links inaccessible and identifying the abused IT resources and malicious actors. India suggests adding a new sub-paragraph under article 41(3) of the draft treaty, which would enable the rendering inaccessible of computer data or digital information pursuant to subparagraph (d) of paragraph 3 of article 28.
Recognition of phishing as predominant cybercrime: Phishing stands out as the predominant cybercrime globally, consistently identified by reports from the FBI, EUROPOL, Interpol, and others. Delegates, and consulting practitioners, would recognise phishing as the most significant threat vector in their respective jurisdictions, the draft states.
What is phishing?
Phishing constitutes a cyberattack tactic aimed at deceiving victims into disclosing sensitive information through fraudulent emails, texts, or phone calls.
According to cyber experts, modus operandi involves a target receiving an email from a source pretending to be legitimate, such as their bank requesting login credentials for various accounts such as banking or credit cards.
Typically, a phishing email encourages a target to click on a link or attachment that’s designed to download malware to their device or network.
