Rajeev Chandrasekhar, India's Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, on December 16 said the biggest challenge when it comes to artificial intelligence is the availability of good talent.
"If there’s anything that keeps me awake at night when we talk about semiconductors or AI, it’s the challenge on talent. We need universities to churn out masters and PhDs in AI," he told Shereen Bhan, Managing Editor of CNBC-TV18 at the CNBC-TV18 Moneycontrol Global AI Conclave.

He believes that while infrastructure-related issues in AI will be resolved quickly, the focus should shift to nurturing talent through academic institutions.
Chandrasekhar pointed out that the benchmark for academic excellence has evolved from securing jobs in companies like Google to encouraging students to build world-class institutions themselves, highlighting a significant shift in the education sector's role in technology development.
Dubbing artificial intelligence as the "greatest invention of our time", Chandrasekhar called for a global framework that regulates AI without demonising it.
He said the Indian government is clear with its ambitions for India to play a leading role in global AI and has laid down the formula for an innovation ecosystem to succeed and be a strong player in AI.
The first-ever Global AI conclave is currently on at Bengaluru’s JW Marriott, and will feature over 16 sessions with policymakers, thought leaders, and global experts discussing the transformative impact of AI across industries. Topics will span exploring AI for enterprises, securing cyber frontiers with AI, and the role of AI in shaping the nation’s future.
