As a tech leader, Acer Chairman and CEO Jason Chen says he is very excited about artificial intelligence and how it is being very rapidly being implemented.
“To start with, we think generative AI will change the usage model of computers. The current computer models, many use it for search. If you have a question you want answers to, the first thing you do is search on the computer. With artificial intelligence (AI), that usage model will change from search to ask. The computer will give you a direct answer in the format that you need,” he says in an exclusive conversation with CNBC-TV18.
The company's enthusiasm for the transformative potential of Generative AI is evident in its forward-looking stance. Acer is actively pioneering this technological shift by developing AI-powered PCs poised to redefine user interactions with computers. “We want to be the first one, if not the first then the first batch of suppliers to come into AI-ready PC,” he adds.
AI PCs are characterised by their ability to run AI applications, such as ChatGPT and Stable Diffusion, locally. This offers a more personalised user experience while ensuring data privacy. The definition of AI PCs includes PCs equipped with AI chips and capabilities. These new PCs are expected to revitalise the personal computer industry.
Acer's investments in AI extend across diverse applications, including Integrated Chip (IC) design and initiatives in the medical field. “One area where I'd like to invest some time is incorporating artificial intelligence into the medical field. Thousands of AI-related medical reports, known as smart medical research journals and papers, are being published. However, many of them remain as merely good reports without progressing into impactful scientific research projects,” he said, adding that Acer is in a position to commercialise that research into real products that will benefit medical requirements.
“About 25 years ago, people talked about how we can bridge the digital divide. We are now here trying very hard to bridge the medical divide from urban to villages,” he added.
On his visit to India, Chen, also reinforced the company’s commitment to the thriving Indian market with strategic initiatives aimed at fostering growth, innovation, and sustainability. As India solidifies its position as a pivotal market for Acer, the company unveils comprehensive expansion plans, transcending domains to venture into new segments like consumer electronics, eMobility, and AI PCs with a strong emphasis on eco-friendly products.
Moving forward, Chen has earmarked a few areas of interest for the country. “Computer, computer science, moving into server, getting into service, cybersecurity, connectivity for network — these are all open areas that we think we can contribute to,” he says.
Chen’s visit to India was on the heels of his visit to Dubai for COP28 where Acer unveiled its vision for ‘Conscious Technology’. Acer pledged a commitment to achieving carbon neutrality for its Aspire Vero laptop line, beginning with the latest Aspire Vero 16 model. Acer has also joined the RE100 initiative and committed to sourcing 100% renewable electricity by 2035. It has also pledged to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
