The International Monetary Fund (IMF) announced that Gita Gopinath, the organization's second Indian top economist and first female, has been promoted to the position of first deputy managing director. She will replace First Deputy Managing Director Geoffrey Okamoto, who will leave the global lender in early 2022, as the IMF's second-ranking official in her new position. In 2018, Gopinath succeeded Raghuram Rajan as the second Indian to hold the position of chief economist at the International Monetary Fund. She had previously been the John Zwaanstra Professor of Economics and International Studies at Harvard University.
About Gita Gopinath
Gopinath, a US citizen and an Indian citizen living abroad, was born and raised in India. After receiving her MAs from the University of Washington and Delhi School of Economics in 2001, she continued her education by pursuing a PhD in Economics at Princeton University. She completed her undergraduate studies at Delhi University's Bachelor of Arts programme. Gopinath joined the Graduate School of Business at the University of Chicago as an Assistant Professor after receiving her PhD. She began working at Harvard in 2005, and in 2010 she was appointed a tenured professor there. At the National Bureau of Economic Research, Gopinath served as co-editor of the American Economic Review and co-director of the International Finance and Macroeconomics Program (NBER). Along with former IMF Economic Counselor Kenneth Rogoff, she is also a co-editor of the most recent edition of the Handbook of International Economics. Gopinath has taken on the role of managing editor of the Review of Economic Studies after publishing more than 40 research articles on a variety of subjects, including exchange rates, trade and investment, the global financial crisis, monetary policy, debt, and developing market crises.

In a Malayali household, Gita Gopinath was born on December 8th, 1971 in Kolkata, India. She is the younger of T.V. Gopinath and V.C. Vijayalakshmi's two daughters. The late A. K. Gopalan was linked to her family. She balanced her duties as the Chief Minister of Kerala's Economic Advisor, a visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, and a member of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York's economic advisory group.

Professor Gopinath has received numerous honours, including recognition from the Financial Times as one of the 25 Most Influential Women of 2021, the Bloomberg 50 People Who Defined 2019, Foreign Policy's list of the Top Global Thinkers, Time Magazine's list of Women Who Broke Major Barriers to Become "Firsts," Vogue India's Women of the Year, and the list of Most Influential Princeton Alumni. She has previously been recognised as one of the top 25 economists under 45 by the IMF, one of the 25 Indians to Watch by the Financial Times, and a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum.
