The Tata Group has successfully retained the title rights for the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the next five years, i.e., until 2028. The Tata Group matched the Aditya Birla Group’s (ABG) bid of ₹500 crore per season.
Tata opted to match any competitive offer made by another entity as per the terms outlined in the Invitation to Tender (ITT) document. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had set the base price for five seasons at ₹1,750 crore.
The ABG had put a bid above the base price of ₹2,500 crore for five years. The Tata Sons decided to exercise the right-to-match option and hence retained the title sponsorship. The BCCI floated the tender on December 12, 2023.
In total, 74 matches will be played in the 2024 season of the league, while the BCCI is likely to increase the number of league games to 84 in 2025 and 2026 and 94 in 2027.
Tata Sons paid ₹670 crore to replace Vivo as the title sponsor for IPL seasons 2022 and 2023. Vivo also paid ₹454 crore to BCCI for contract termination for the 2022 season.
DLF, Pepsi, Vivo and Dream11 have held the rights to the tournament since the league's inaugural edition in 2008.
