Neeraj Chopra secured the gold medal in the Asian Games 2023 as he successfully defended his crown with a throw of 88.8 meters in Hangzhou, China, on Wednesday.

Kishore Kumar Jena bagged the silver medal for India by throwing a personal best of 87.54 meters, thus also qualifying for the Paris Olympics 2024. Jena had briefly surpassed Chopra to top the rankings before the reigning Olympic champion produced a majestic throw to reclaim his spot and win his second consecutive gold medal in the Asian Games.
Chopra’s first throw, which landed somewhere between 80 and 85 meters, could not be recorded due to a technical malfunction. He started off slowly, with one of his throws even falling short of the 80-meter mark. However, the athlete regained his confidence and eventually threw with profound technique and momentum to add another feather to his already illustrious career.
Chopra came into the Asian Games after suffering a minor setback in the Diamond League finals in Eugene in September. He had finished second in the Diamond League champion's title with the best throw of 83.80 meters.
Chopra, who won gold in the World Athletics Championships last month, was taken aback by windy conditions in the final at the Hayward Field. That was his first below 85-meter throw of the season. He had qualified for the Diamond League Finals at the third spot.
He won the 2022 Diamond League Finals in Zurich with a throw of 88.44 meters. Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic had become the Diamond League champion for the third time with a best throw of 84.24 meters which came in his sixth and final attempt.
