The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has confirmed they are monitoring Rishabh Pant's recovery progress daily ahead of IPL 2024.
“Pant is doing well and he is batting and is also keeping. Shortly, we (BCCI) will declare him fit. If he can play in the T20 World Cup for India, that will be a big thing for us. He is a big asset for us,” Jay Shah said during an interaction on the sidelines of the fifth Test match between India-England in Dharmsala.
Shah also cleared the air about Pant's selection in the team which will depend on his fitness and will be decided by the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore.
Shah added, “The door is open for him. Right now he has begun to keep, so we are waiting. Our team is accessing his fitness and it’s only after consulting them, that we can give him the clearance on fitness.”
Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting stated that he has started training but it will only depend on his fitness.
“It’s a big decision we’ll have to make because if he is fit, you’d think he’d step straight back into that captaincy role. If he’s not entirely fit and we have to use him in a slightly different role, then we’ve got some decisions to make there,” Ponting said.
