Restarting India: Are malls ready for the change in customer behaviour post-COVID? Here’s what experts have to say

The central government has allowed shopping malls in non-containment zones to resume operations from the June 8, subject to state approvals. So far, there has been no order on reopening malls in big cities like Mumbai and Delhi. For Delhi, however, a call on reopening malls could be taken around June 7 after assessing the ground situation.

The Shopping Centres Association of India (SCAI) has laid down a list of standard operating protocols (SOPs) for malls to follow. These range from not more than 50 percent employee strength at malls till further notice to temperature screenings to a cap on entry to the stores operating inside these malls. The SCAI last week had said that malls have lost over Rs 90,000 crore in the first two months of the lockdown.
