The ruling K Chandrashekar Rao-led Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has been handed a resounding defeat by the Congress in Telangana, paving the way for the first transition of power from one party to another since the formation of the state in 2014. KCR, who became the first chief minister of Telangana in 2014, will not be returning to power after his party managed to secure only 39 seats in the 119-member assembly. Congress, led by A Revanth Reddy, secured 64 seats, four more than the magic number.
The BRS's KT Rama Rao conceded defeat early in the day and congratulated Congress for the win.
Grateful to the people of Telangana for giving @BRSparty two consecutive terms of Government 🙏
Not saddened over the result today, but surely disappointed as it was not in expected lines for us. But we will take this in our stride as a learning and will bounce back…— KTR (@KTRBRS) December 3, 2023
According to current trends, KCR, who contested from both Gajwel and Kamareddy, is leading Bharatiya Janata Party's Etela Rajender — a former BRS legislator and minister — by over 34,000 votes in the former and lost to BJP's Katipally Venkata Ramana Reddy by a little more than 6,700 votes in the former. Reddy, who too ran from two seats including Kamareddy, handily won Kodangal by more than 32,000 votes.

Meanwhile, K. Chandrashekar Rao's son and key BRS leader K Taraka Rama Rao (KTR) won Sircilla by nearly 30,000 votes, defeating Congress party's KK Mahender Reddy.
Former Indian cricket captain and Congress MP Mohammed Azharuddin is trailing sitting BRS MLA Maganti Gopinath in Jubilee Hills by 8,176 votes.
In 2018, BRS secured a landslide victory by winning 88 seats, while Congress bagged 19, and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) won in seven constituencies.
