The Sikh community will be considered as a separate ethnic group for the 2020 United States Census.
This is done to ensure the accurate count of Sikhs in the Census. They fulfil the criteria of being a distinct ethnic group and have a unified appearance, culture, language, food and history for the census.
Various Sikh communities had advocated for the classification for years which will also help address issues like bullying, intimidation and hate crimes. Currently, over 10 lakh Sikhs live in the US.
