Three Aam Aadmi Party nominees in Delhi and a Bharatiya Janata Party candidate in Sikkim were elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha. Sanjay Singh, ND Gupta and Swati Maliwal were elected unopposed as no candidate from any other party filed nomination for the elections.
"All three Rajya Sabha nominees have been elected unopposed. And, certificates have also been issued," a senior official in the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer's (CEO) office told PTI.
The AAP had nominated Maliwal as its Rajya Sabha candidate, and renominated Singh and Gupta for a second term in the Upper House of Parliament.
The six-year term of Singh, ND Gupta and Sushil Kumar Gupta ends on January 27. Maliwal's name was nominated by the party to replace Sushil Gupta.
BJP candidate elected unopposed
BJP candidate Dorjee Tshering Lepcha won the lone Rajya Sabha seat in Sikkim uncontested. Lepcha, who was the only person to file nomination for the election, was declared elected after his papers were scrutinised and found to be in order, officials told PTI.
As the Rajya Sabha MP from Sikkim, Lepcha will succeed Sikkim Democrartic Front's Hishey Lachungpa whose term will end on February 23. Lepcha's candidature was backed by the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha.
Lepcha's nomination is seen as his reward for helping the BJP become a major player in the Himalayan state. Lepcha along with nine SDF MLAs switched over to the saffron party, making it the second largest party in the state assembly overnight.
