Political necessity for Congress and AAP to join hands in Delhi

In 2014 Lok Sabha elections, BJP's vote share was 46 percent, AAP’s was 33 percent and Congress' was 15 percent and therefore, if Congress and AAP get together, they could give the BJP a tough fight, Chacko said.

The former Kerala MP feels this is in line with the party's vision. He said, “Congress working committee has decided that the party should go for an alliance with like-minded parties to defeat BJP. We are doing that in many states and the coalition partners of Congress are suggesting that we align with AAP in Delhi. AAP is also expressing a willingness to align with Congress.”

Sources privy to the developments told CNBC-TV18 that Ghulam Nabi Azad, Ahmed Patel and Anand Sharma have been in touch with Arvind Kejriwal and Sanjay Singh. Leaders involved with the talks say that Congress should be ready to give four seats to AAP and fight on three seats itself.

Congress's Delhi president Sheila Dikshit has expressed reservations against any alliance with AAP but sources say five former state Congress presidents have tried to convince her and several district presidents also believe that an alliance should be formed with AAP.

According to people familiar with the matter, Congress came third in the last Lok Sabha elections and was completely wiped out in assembly elections and therefore, it would be difficult for it to win seats in Delhi on its own.

CNBC-TV18 has learnt from party sources that a senior leader has told Rahul Gandhi clearly that the Congress won't even win a single seat in Delhi if it doesn't ally with the AAP.

Congress recently conducted a survey among 39,000 party workers and the results are with the party president who could take a call on the alliance in the next few days.
