Lok Sabha elections: 311 crorepatis, 189 candidates with criminal cases in the sixth phase
Polling for the sixth and penultimate phase of 2019 Lok Sabha elections will be held on Sunday. In this phase, 979 candidates are contesting for the 59 seats Lok Sabha seats across six states and one Union Territory. Voting will take place in Bihar (8), Jharkhand (4), Madhya Pradesh (8), Uttar Pradesh (14), West Bengal (8), Haryana (all 10) and Delhi (all 7).

Crorepati Candidates
Out of the 979 candidates, the number of rich candidates is being declared as 311, according to the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).  It means 311 (32 percent) candidates have assets worth Rs 1 crore and more. ADR has analysed 967 of the total 979 candidates, who are contesting in this phase.
Among the major parties, 46 (85 percent) out of 54 candidates from BJP, 37 (80 percent) out of 46 candidates from Congress, 31 (63 percent) out of 49 candidates from BSP, 6 (50 percent) out of 12 candidates from AAP and 71 (23 percent) out of 307 independent candidates have declared assets worth more than Rs. 1 crore.
With assets worth Rs 374 crore, Congress candidate Jyotiraditya Scindia tops the list. He is contesting from Guna constituency of Madhya Pradesh. Former cricketer Gautam Gambhir is in second in the list with assets worth Rs 147 crore. He is contesting from East Delhi constituency.
Criminal Candidates
  • Out of all candidates analysed, 189 (20%) candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves.
  • Candidates with serious criminal cases: 146 (15%) out of 967 candidates analysed.
  • Candidates with declared convicted cases: 4.
  • Candidates with cases related to murder: 6 candidates have declared cases related to murder (IPC Section -302).
  • Candidates with cases related to Attempt to Murder: 25 candidates have declared cases related to attempt to murder (IPC Section 307).
  • Candidates with cases related to crime against women: 21.
  • Party-wise, 26 (48 percent) out of 54 candidates from BJP, 20 (44 percent) out of 46 candidates from Congress, 19 (39 percent) out of 49 candidates from BSP, 5 (31 percent) out of 16 candidates from Shiv Sena and 34 (11 percent) out of 307 independent candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.
    Red Alert Constituencies
    Red alert constituencies are those where 3 or more contesting candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves, according to ADR.
