With the Election Commission announcing the schedule for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, political parties have sounded the poll bugle across 543 parliamentary constituencies in the country. The seven-phase 2024 general elections will be held from April 19 to June 1, with the counting of votes to take place on June 4.
In Karnataka’s 28 Lok Sabha seats, voting will be held in two phases on April 26 (14 seats) and May 7 (14 seats).
One of the fastest growing economies in the country known for its strong IT hub, Karnataka holds significant importance in the political arena and remains a keenly watched state during the elections, drawing attention from parties like Congress, BJP, and JD(S).
During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won 26 of the 28 seats in the state. Congress and JD (S) – the former alliance partners – ended up with a seat each.
The state witnessed a voter turnout of 68.81% in 2019. The BJP received a 51.38% vote share, and the Congress and JD(S) were restricted to 31.88% and 9.67%, respectively.
However, after Congress' thumping majority in the 2023 Assembly elections in the state, the ruling NDA is expected to put some extra effort into repeating its 2019 performance in the state.
This time, the Congress is contesting the polls alone, while the BJP and JD(S) are yet to announce their seat-sharing formula.
