The US-Mexico borders have been seeing an influx of Indian immigrants, fifth-largest group of immigrants after Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, a report by VOA said.
According to Syracuse University's TRAC, about 2,227 Indians were apprehended trying to cross the US-Mexico border in 2017, while in 2018, till date, 4,197 immigrants attempted to cross the border, the report said.
A majority of the immigrants are Sikhs who are trying to flee the "political persecution" with a religious component, according to lawyers who are representing them in the US asylum cases, the report said, adding that the persecution is by the right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Federal officers have been forced to detain Sikhs following Trump administration's "zero-tolerance" policy, VOA reported.
It added that a United States federal court judge last week ordered officials at the Sheridan prison, outside of Oregon, to work with the public defender's office to ensure that incarcerated Sikhs can practice their religion.
