India and China have agreed to cool down the situation at the line of actual control (LAC) as soon as possible. That's the key news point emerging from the phone call between external affairs minister S Jaishankar and foreign minister Wang Yi.

According to the MEA, both ministers agreed that the overall situation should be handled in a responsible manner and neither side should escalate matters. Both countries have also agreed to implement the disengagement understanding reached on June 6.
The foreign minister level talks are taking place after India confirmed that 20 Indian soldiers have been killed in violent clashes at the Galwan Valley.
This area is very close to India's 255 kilometre Darbuk Shyok DBO road and India's move to build a bridge over the Galwan Valley connecting Durbuk to the Daulat Beg Oldi Airstrip seems to have alarmed the Chinese as the bridge is just 7.5 kilometres from the LAC.
India's foreign minister has accused China of trying to erect a structure in Galwan Valley on the Indian side of LAC. The MEA said when Indian troops protested over the move, the Chinese side acted in a pre-meditated manner and attacked Indian troops. Clearly India China ties have been severely impacted and to discuss the road ahead from here, Parikshit Luthra spoke to Brigadier (Retd) V Mahalingam, defence & strategic analyst, Jayant Dasgupta, former ambassador to WTO, Phunchok Stobdan, strategic affairs expert, Ananth Krishnan, visiting fellow at Brookings India and Praveen Swami, Group Consulting Editor of Network18.
