Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi on Monday concluded his customary address to the House within a few minutes and said that he disagreed with the MK Stalin-led DMK dispensation over the content of the address on factual and moral grounds. He even criticised the regime for ‘not respecting’ the National Anthem. During his inaugural address, Ravi noted that his repeated requests to the state government to show due respect to the National Anthem were ignored.
“My repeated request and advice to show due respect to the National Anthem and play it at the beginning and end of the address has been ignored. This address has numerous passages with which I convincingly disagree on factual and moral grounds. I lending my voice to them would constitute a constitutional travesty. Hence, with respect to the House, I conclude my address. Wish this House a productive and healthy discussion for the good of the people,” Ravi said during the Tamil Nadu Assembly session.

The Governor offered his greetings in Tamil to Speaker M Appavu, Chief Minister M K Stalin, and Legislators, and later ended his speech within a few minutes after conveying his disagreement with the state government.
Tamil Nadu Speaker M Appavu said, “The Governor did not read his full speech, but I don't want to blame him. He also said the National Anthem should have been recited. Everyone has opinions, if we say anything it won't be ethical. In this government, the Chief Minister, the Ministers, and all MLAs treat the Governor with respect irrespective of different opinions.”
Reacting on the matter, Tamil Nadu Leader of Opposition and AIADMK's Edappadi K Palaniswami said, "The Governor requested that the National Anthem be recited at the beginning of the session of Tamil Nadu Assembly. After his suggestion was ignored, he refused to make the customary address. This is an issue between the Governor and the state government.”
Attacking the state government, Tamil Nadu BJP vice president Narayanan Thirupathy told ANI, "The Governor has said repeatedly that the National Anthem should be played both at the start and end of the assembly session. What is the problem in doing that? If there are wrong statistics (in the address) the Governor has the right to omit or deny them.”
Recently, Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan also ended his customary address in a few minutes and read out only the last paragraph of his customary address.
Last year, too, Governor RN Ravi had stormed out of the House and skipped portions of the speech prepared by the ruling DMK. Stalin had moved a resolution urging the Speaker to take on record only the text of the Governor’s address, which has been approved.
Ravi, who was appointed as the Governor of Tamil Nadu on September 18, 2021, has been accused by the Stalin government of creating hurdles in its work on numerous occasions.
In December last year, the Supreme Court had asked him to hold a meeting with Stalin to resolve the impasse over the non-grant of assent to Bills passed by the state Assembly, PTI reported.
Last year, Stalin had even written a letter to President Droupadi Murmu stating that the Tamil Nadu Governor, through his “biased” actions, proved to be “unfit” for the constitutional post.
