The Election Commission on Wednesday (March 27) issued show-cause notices to BJP leader Dilip Ghosh and Congress leader Supriya Shrinate for making derogatory remarks against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and BJP's Lok Sabha candidate Kangana Ranaut, respectively.
Kangana Ranaut has been nominated by the BJP to contest from Himachal Pradesh's Mandi Lok Sabha seat in the upcoming parliamentary elections. The political controversy triggered after Shrinate allegedly made an objectionable remark against Kangana, through her social account handle.
The Election Commission deemed the remarks made by Ghosh and Shrinate as "undignified and in bad taste."
According to the Election Commission, the remarks made by the two leaders prima facie violated the Model Code of Conduct, along with the advisory urging political parties to maintain decorum during election campaigning. They have been given until the evening of March 29 to respond to the show-cause notices.
The Election Commission has set the deadline for Dilip Ghosh and Supriya Shrinate to submit their responses by 5 pm on March 29, 2024.
