On conferring Bharat Ratna to former Bihar chief minister Karpoori Thakur (posthumously), the RJD leader welcomed it but alleged that the BJP gives Bharat Ratna “to strike a deal in exchange for votes”. “I am happy that Karpoori Thakur got (Bharat Ratna)… but the BJP has made Bharat Ratna a deal… a deal in exchange for votes,” he said. “When Karpoori Thakur had increased the (quantum of) reservation in the state, Jan Sangh had removed Karpooriji from the post of the chief minister. And you (Nitish) are sitting with them!” Yadav said.

“The BJP was scared of the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ government in Bihar… Can Prime Minister Narendra Modi guarantee that Nitish Kumar will not do another volte-face?” he said. “I feel bad for JD(U) MLAs because they will have to go to the people and answer. If someone asks you why Nitish Kumar took oath three times, what will you say? Earlier you used to criticise them (BJP) and now you are praising them, what will you say?” said the RJD leader.

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav on Monday said he always considered Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar as a “father figure”, and wondered what forced him to ditch the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ and return to the BJP-led NDA.

“I always considered Nitish Kumar as ‘Dashrath’ (character from the epic ‘Ramayan’). I don’t know what reasons forced him to ditch the ‘Mahagathbandhan’,” the former deputy CM said.

State Deputy CM Vijay Sinha says, “They had not even imagined this. We have just shown them a trailer, the entire movie is still pending. Holding their MLAs like bonded labourers is an insult to the MLAs. They will surely learn their lesson from this… I have taken a pledge, that I will fulfil the dream of Mahatma Gandhi, Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyay, and Ram Manohar Lohia of a caste-free society in Bihar… I will welcome all those who will raise the standards of Bihar and the people of Bihar. I will not let Bihar be reduced to slang anymore and will ensure Bihar gets its due respect in the country.”

After the Nitish Kumar- led NDA government won the trust vote in Bihar Assembly, BJP MLA Haribhushan Thakur said, “We have been working for Bihar’s public. We have inspired many people and they have joined us. Now we will work together for the welfare of the people of Bihar.”

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday alleged that the RJD indulged in corrupt practices during the party’s rule in the state, and the new NDA-led government will initiate a probe into it. Kumar, taking part in the confidence motion moved by his JD(U) in the state assembly, also claimed that during RJD’s tenure, several communal riots took place in Bihar. “There was no law and order. The RJD indulged in corrupt practices during its rule (before 2005)… I will get these probed, he said.

Kumar had recently dumped the Mahagathbandhan’, of which the RJD was a key constituent, and returned to the NDA fold to form the government with support of the BJP. (PTI)

The Nitish Kumar-led NDA government in Bihar won a vote of confidence in the assembly on Monday. The new government secured 129 votes amid a walkout by the opposition members.

The Bihar assembly has a strength of 243 MLAs. (PTI)
