Reaching out to regional parties to push for an anti-BJP alliance a day after the saffron camp swept elections in four states, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday sought to edge the Congress out of any prospective opposition formation, stating there was no point in waiting for the grand old party as its lacked 'fire in the belly'.

Following the poor show of the Congress in the just-concluded Assembly elections in five states, including the loss of Punjab, the top leadership held by the Gandhis should step aside and make way for a new leadership as the writing is clearly on the wall, senior leader of the party 'Americai' V Narayanan said on Friday. The AICC member, also a Congress spokesperson, rued that the party, whose incumbent government in Punjab lost to AAP, fumbled in the election with mismanagement of the party.

Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday termed the assembly poll results unfortunate but said the party will win back the confidence of people soon. The Congress received a drubbing in assembly elections in five states of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa, Uttarakhand and Manipur. It lost Punjab to the Aam Aadmi Party.

BJP clean sweep in Modi's Varanasi, Aditynath's Gorakhpur; all seats in Akhilesh's Azamgarh go to SP

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav saw their parties making a clean sweep in the assembly segments in their parliamentary constituencies. The BJP and its allies won all assembly seats in Modi's Varanasi and Adityanath's Gorakhpur, and the SP bagged all 10 segments in Yadav's Azamgarh Lok Sabha constituency.
