The blaze reportedly started on Thursday (February 22) 5:30 PM Spanish local time in a 14-storey apartment block on the outskirts of the city centre and later spread to an adjacent building, sending large plumes of smoke into the sky. (Image: Reuters)
When reported to the authorities, 16 firefighting units were deployed to put out the blaze and search for the missing people. The teams have been seen rescuing trapped residents from balconies as well. (Image: Reuters)
Although the main cause of the fire is not known, experts suggested that the highly flammable materials in the building could have been the reason for the deadly fire. According to media reports, the fire ripped the entire high-rise residential building, which had 138 flats accommodating around 450 individuals. (Image: AP)
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez extended his condolences to people who their family members. “Dismayed by the terrible fire in a building in Valencia. I just spoke with the president and the mayor to know first-hand about the situation and offer all the help that is necessary,” Sanchez said. “I want to convey my solidarity to all the people affected and recognition to all the emergency personnel already deployed at the scene.” (Image: Reuters)
