Sunil 'Sunny' Gavaskar is regarded as one of the greatest opening batsmen in cricket. Today the legendary opener and former India captain celebrates his 73rd  birthday. He was part of the 1983 World Cup winning team and by the time he retired from cricket in November 1987, he had many titles and records under his belt. Awards and honors bestowed on Sunil Gavaskar | In 1989, Gavaskar was named one of the Wisden cricketers of the year. In 1980, he was honoured with the Padma Bhushan award. In 1994, Gavaskar was sworn in as Bombay Sheriff, an honorary post, for a year. In 1996, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy was instituted in his co-honour. In 2003, he became the first and the only Indian cricketer to have delivered an MCC Spirit Of Cricket Cowdrey Lecture. In 2009 Gavaskar was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame, three years later in 2012, BCCI honoured him with the Col. CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2017, Gavaskar inaugurated a cricket field in Louisville Kentucky, US. It was the first international sporting facility named after an Indian sportsperson. (Image: ICC)
