Free-for-all Diwali fireworks despite Supreme Court order as pollution levels intensify across India

SUMMARY

Diwali was celebrated with the unfettered fireworks long associated with one of the biggest festivals of India despite a Supreme Court order on restricted timings. Result: pollution levels in several parts of the country, especially in New Delhi, rose to severe levels on Thursday. Revellers burst crackers long into the night to mark, with several people wearing masks. Gathered here are images of the festivities and the smog that has enveloped cities.
