In June 2023, Fortune magazine put out a report saying in the US, Gen Z is investing younger than any past generation and 80% of Gen Zers are investing their money before they hit 20 years of age. In India, where 27% of the population belongs to Gen Z, the trend is catching on, prompting a closer look at investment opportunities for the younger generation.

Ravi Dharamshi, the founder and Chief Investment Officer of ValueQuest Investment Advisors, with over two decades of experience in capital markets, sheds light on the importance of starting early in the investment game. Drawing inspiration from Warren Buffett, who began investing at the age of 11, Dharamshi emphasises that initiating investments at a young age is crucial.
Dharamshi stated, “One thing that Warren says is that he started investing at the age of 11 and he was a little late. So that means at least these guys are starting at the right time. I am 45 today and I probably started at 22-23. I should have also started earlier so starting early is the most important thing.”

According to Dharamshi, becoming a DIY investor requires the right mindset, mentors, and a commitment to continuous learning. He stresses the significance of reading and evolving into a "learning machine" to navigate the complexities of the financial world.
The encouraging aspect, as highlighted by Dharamshi, is that investing is a liberal art, implying that intellectual prowess can pave the way to financial success without the need for substantial initial capital.
Dharamshi further mentioned among the four primary asset classes – real estate, gold, fixed deposits, and equity investments – gold and real estate typically dominate portfolios, despite their occasionally inconsistent returns and relatively illiquid nature. The key lies in discerning what suits one's financial goals at different life stages.
