The Tamil Nadu state government will launch a social welfare initiative — Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai Thittam — on September 15. This scheme is aimed at providing monthly financial assistance of Rs 1,000 to 1.06 crore eligible women family heads. Along with financial support to women, the scheme also pays tribute to the legacy of former CM C.N. Annadurai, as it coincides with his birth anniversary.

Virtually reviewing the scheme, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin recently said the state has allocated Rs 7,000 crore for the scheme. Of the nearly 1.63 crore applications received for the scheme so far, a total of 1.06 crore have been accepted, he said. To keep beneficiaries informed and updated about the scheme, he said the government will utilise SMS notifications.
Eligibility criteria: Who qualifies for assistance?
Under the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai Thittam, all women and transgender individuals above 21 years of age are eligible to apply. This includes unmarried and widowed women who are the heads of their households.
To qualify, applicants should have an annual income of less than Rs 2.5 lakh, making the scheme particularly beneficial for economically vulnerable women. Land ownership is also taken into account, with applicants allowed to own less than 10 acres of dry land or five acres of wetland.
In addition to income and land ownership, the annual domestic power consumption of the family should be less than 3,600 units. These criteria aim to target assistance towards households facing genuine financial challenges.
Exemptions: Who doesn't qualify?
While the scheme aims to be inclusive, certain categories of individuals are exempted from applying. These include employees of state and central governments and public sector undertakings (PSUs), bank employees, income taxpayers, professional taxpayers, pensioners, elected representatives of local bodies, and owners of four-wheelers.
Application process: How to apply?
To apply for the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai Thittam, eligible women should visit their local ration shops. Each family can nominate one woman member on the ration card for the benefit. In cases where a man's name is listed as the head of the family on the ration card, his wife will be considered for the scheme. Importantly, only one beneficiary is allowed for each ration card of a family.
With an expected influx of applications, district collectors have been tasked with ensuring a smooth registration process at the ration shops.
How will beneficiaries receive the aid?
The financial aid will be directly transferred into the bank accounts of the beneficiaries, ensuring a streamlined and efficient distribution process. To further facilitate easy access to the funds, ATM cards will be issued to eligible women, enabling them to withdraw the allocated amount as needed.
